Apple Appeals Samsung Ruling In Japan Court

Samsung actually won a case

Even though the first chapter in the massive US legal battle between Samsung and Apple has been written in Apple's favor, that is only one chapter in this epic saga. And a ruling in a Japan court shows that all of these issues aren't exactly open-and-shut cases.

On August 31, it was decided in a Tokyo court decision that Samsung did not violate an Apple patent related to synchronizing music and video in server databases.

Judge Tamotsu Shoji wrote in hir ruling, "It’s hard to believe the products belong to the range of technologies of the claimant."

He told Apple that it had to pay Samsung's legal fees. Apple had sought to win around $1.3 million in damages.

Because there are enough legal battles between the two companies to write an entire law school textbook, it's hard to keep track of them all, but this claim is different than the one in the landmark ruling in the US.

It seems to be the international norm that Samsung did indeed violate at least some Apple patents related to smartphone and tablet technology, but the extent and the degree of the infractions is really in question.

In the US, of course, there is a mighty appeals process in the works, and Samsung recently won a small victory when a preliminary ban on its smartphones was overturned, pending the results of further appeal claims.
