So it hardly came as a shock to anyone, but Apple today lifted the veil on the iPhone 5 at a media event in California. At first glance, it appears to be little more than an incremental upgrade over the iPhone 4S.

To be sure, there are a lot of hardware improvements. The phone carries a 4-inch display, giving it more touchscreen real estate than any iPhone before it. And it does so while also decreasing the bulk of the phone.

At just 7.6mm, it's 18% thinner than the iPhone 4S, and at 112 grams it is 20% lighter. It has high-resolution Retina Display technology, but so did the iPhone 4S so there's nothing new there.

It also supports 4G LTE connectivity on Sprint, Verizon, and AT&T - a welcome addition to the iPhone family but again, not exactly groundbreaking technology.

Notably absent was the presence of near field communication (NFC) technology, and no new carrier partner announcements.

On the software side of things, updated versions of iLife, iWork, and other native Apple apps will be pre-installed. Apple promises up to 8 hours of 3G talk time, and 8 hours of browsing over an LTE network.

So the biggest updates that iPhone aficianados will notice include the larger display, which makes room for a fifth row of icons and allows users to have easier access to more apps, and the ability to connect to LTE networks.

The iPhone 5 will be available on September 21. Pre-orders open up this Friday.
