Amazon Will Not Launch iPad-Size Kindle Fire

Even though Apple is launching a Kindle Fire-size iPad

Even though the much-rumored iPad Mini will be aiming to take a bite out of the Kindle Fire's market share, it looks like Amazon is not going to return the favor. The retailer is reportedly not going to launch a 10-inch version of its tablet, despite previous reports that such a device was in the works.

According to Cnet, Amazon is definitely planning on releasing new Kindle Fire models. However, they will remain the same tried-and-true 7-inch size that put the tablet brand on the map in the first place.

The Kindle Fire's $199 price tag very much puts it in the "impulse buy" category, and even at that low price point it is believed that Amazon might be turning a small profit on every unit sold.

Where it really makes its money, though, is through the sale of digital content that happens on the device. So users who purchase or rent movies and TV shows, or buy MP3 tracks, or sign up for Amazon Prime for streaming videos, are the ones who really generate Kindle Fire profits.

Apple's tablet strategy is slightly different. It has high markups on the hardware itself, and relies on other people to promote their own iPad apps. Apple just needs to sit back and take a cut of their sales.

So it will be interesting to see if the iPad Mini has any alternative strategy, but it looks like right now it will just be a dumbed-down version of the iPad (potentially based on the iPad 2 or even a model of the iPhone).
