Apple's Foxconn Plants Have Improved: Audit

But there is still more work to be done

Apple's public image may receive a little bit of a boost thanks a new audit of worker conditions at the enormous Foxconn plant overseas, which found that people who work on assembling iPhones and iPads are receiving better treatment, but there is still more work to be done.

An independent audit was performed by the Fair Labor Association, which found that changes it had recommended in an earlier audit had in fact been implemented.

However, the FLA said, the company still needs to cut back the number of hours that employees are required to work in a given week by nearly a third.

This all comes after an onslaught of negative media put an immense spotlight on worker conditions at Foxconn a couple years ago. There were numerous reported incidents of worker suicide, and investigative reports found the mostly young employees being worked to the bone while doing some of the most monotous jobs you could imagine.

The FLA president Auret van Heerden recognized that Apple and Foxconn were working to improve that image, and improve the lives of people who put those electronics together.

"One of the sheer engineering challenges is being able to shorten the production cycle, so that they can get it all done in 49 hours instead of 60 hours. And the other part of the challenge then is workers' expectations," Heerden was quoted as saying by Reuters.

A lot of the changes have come as a result of Tim Cook stepping in as the new CEO of Apple.
