One of the most common crimes in New York City is the theft of Apple devices. The theft is so prevalent that the NYPD is putting out flyers to trying to get Apple users to upgrade their devices to iOS 7. The new operating system provides improved security and would mean feeds would be unable to use or sell stolen iPhones running the operating system.

The flyers read, “Attention Apple Users!!!! The new iOS7 software update avaialble [sic] for your Apple product brings added security to your devices.”

The new version of the operating system has a Activation Lock feature that makes it impossible for thieves to deactivate the Find My iPhone app without the owners Apple ID and password. If the phone can’t be activated the NYPD hopes thieves will stop stealing the devices.
