More men than women online: UN report

Sep 22 2013, 5:46am CDT | by IANS

United Nations, Sep 22 (IANS) Of the world's 2.8 billion internet users, 1.3 billion users are women, while 1.5 billion are men, says a UN report.

United Nations, Sep 22 — Of the world's 2.8 billion internet users, 1.3 billion users are women, while 1.5 billion are men, says a UN report.

The gap between men and women internet users could grow to 350 million in the next three years, the UN Broadband Commission said in its first global report on "Broadband and Gender" released here Saturday, Xinhua reported.

The report titled "Doubling Digital Opportunities: Enhancing the Inclusion of Women & Girls in the Information Society" revealed a "significant and pervasive 'tech gap' in access to information and communication technologies (ICTs)".

The gap between male and female online users widens rapidly in the developing world, where expensive and "high status" ICTs like computers are often reserved for use by men, the report said.

In other findings, women worldwide are on average 21 percent less likely to own a mobile phone, representing a gender gap of 300 million, equating to $13 billion in potential missed revenues for the mobile sector.

The report brought together research from UN agencies, commission members and partners from industry, government and civil society, to create the first comprehensive global snapshot of broadband access by gender.

It was officially launched by Helen Clark, the administrator of the UN Development Programme (UNDP), who has led the working group since its establishment in New York in September last year.

The report also said that in developing countries, every 10 percent increase in access to broadband translated to a 1.38 percent growth in the gross domestic product (GDP).

This means that bringing an additional 600 million women and girls online could boost global GDP by as much as $18 billion.

The Broadband Commission Working Group on Gender was initially proposed in 2012 by Geena Davis, actress and special envoy of the International Telecommunication Union.

Aug 11 2014 9:02am CDT | Source: The Mac Observer

Before the days of Web browsers and broadband Internet, online communities were hosted by single computers you connected to by dialing in over a traditional phone line via a modem. If you miss the old days -- or never had the chance to experience a BBS -- now you can, thanks to Level 29. The system runs on an Apple IIGS with a blazing fast (for 1983) 300 bps modem, but since not everyone happens to have a modem or physical phone line handy, you can also ...

How to optimize broadband while on vacation

Aug 11 2014 8:00am CDT | Source: Mac World

Reader Patty Hamilton is in the mood for travel but would like to remain connected. She writes: My family and I are renting a house for a week’s vacation. I’ve been told that wireless Internet is provided but I’ve found some of these “free” connections can be so slow that they’re almost unusable. Any hints for using broadband on vacation? The good news is that broadband speeds tend to be better for home and condo rentals than some motels and hotels because they’re plumbed with connections ...
