The new iPhone 5S is not just attractive and feature laden. The new motion-sensor chip it features is serving as foundation for a new generation of wearable-computing products, according to Apple-focused technology analysts who say that this new chip represents a first important step for the company.
Ever since the unveiling of the two new iPhone models, analysts have been using the devices’ specifications as clues about where the company might be headed next. Apple has been the focus of much scrutiny lately because of their failure to brave a new product category since the introduction of the iPad in 2010. New revenue streams could be created if the company enters the watch-computing category.
Only the iPhone 5S features the new motion sensor chip and fingerprint reader that are making waves in the technological world. A suggestion that Apple move to wearable products does not prove unreasonable or unfounded, considering that the company has already been taking steps towards this goal by seeking trademarks in several countries, including Japan, for the name ‘iWatch’.
Apple would not be free of competition when entering the wearable-computing niche. There is already Nike Inc., Jawbone, and Fitbit Inc., all companies with wearable computing products on the market. The use of Apple’s fingerprint scanner as a payment method might be an upset for EBay’s PayPal smartphone payment processing network.
The motion sensor chip featured in the iPhone 5S would prove powerful when incorporated into a fitness monitor watch. It would provide users with a seamless experience, as they become enabled to monitor their daily activities more closely. This technology would not be an idea those in the industry have not considered before, but they had limitations because of demand of all-day usage on battery power, a problem that the motion sensor chip of the iPhone 5S does not have.
